Maintenance + Cleaning FAQs

Before performing any cleaning procedures that the Bellwether team has not explicitly mentioned, please email us at support@bellwethercoffee.com or call +1-844-307-7304.

Ask before performing additional maintenance

Unless instructed by a Bellwether Technician, it is best not to go beyond the routine maintenance (Emptying Chaff Can and Water Reservoir, Cleaning Pre-Filter, vacuuming the Bellwether at the end of the roasting day).

If you believe your roaster is not performing correctly, note what you are seeing and hearing, and reach out to our Support Team. Feel free to contact us via:

  • You can reach us on the phone Monday – Friday 9 AM – 9 PM EST at 844-307-7304.

I’m noticing brown accumulation on my roasting drum and agitator. Is this normal? Will this taint the coffee’s flavor?

The brown accumulating on your drum and agitator is normal and will not contribute to any adverse flavors. The build-up happens on all roasters and is not detrimental to the roaster or the roast quality.

It does look a little strange, but it is nothing to worry about. It is the oil from the coffee that dries and peels off after a while. The drum and the agitator are made of bare stainless steel and are food safe. The peeled-off flakes then get separated along with the chaff and do not end up in the coffee beans.

Do I need to scrub or clean the roasting drum, the agitator, or the glass to get the brown off?

No, you do not. The brown accumulating on your drum and agitator is normal and will not contribute to any adverse flavors. That build-up happens on all roasters and is not detrimental to the roaster or the roast quality.

Your technician will clean the glass during your Preventative Maintenace visit.

The small circular window in the front of the Bellwether is becoming brown as I roast. Is there any way to clean it?

We hear you! It’s lovely to get a clear view of the coffee roasting. Unfortunately, we do not advise cleaning it yourself. Your technician will clean the window for you during your next service visit.
